View Full Version : Too Much To Think About.....

....and too much to learn! I feel like the last couple years of my life I have spent alot of time doing all that I can to learn about the proper care, training, history, and ANYTHING else I can find about my dogs, and APBT's, but I hardly know anything. Every once in a while after opening site after site and reading when I should be....cleaning, or cooking, or actually working WITH my dogs, :o I wonder why I even start into reading some of this stuff. Ever feel like you'll never know enough to be satisfied? I'm not giving up, just feeling behind a little.

And today while at the SPCA, I was informed that they have been getting in MANY more pitties/pit mixes than ever before, which I figured :(. What I did not know was that any dog that shows ANY sign of HA or DA is immediately put down. The HA, understandable, as long as you take into consideration that they may be scared for their lives depending on the situation they came from. But DA? In a APBT that's being housed in a too small, over crowded, SPCA? I'd almost expect these dogs to go nutty after being cooped up a day or two there. And DA to them isnt considered actual DA, any dog that snarls, barks, lunges, or makes an aggressive move to another dog from inside a kennel will get them put down.

It's so dissapointing to know that they are killing so many of these dogs, they simply dont understand that they cant be kept in a kennel with a life like that like all the lab mixes are. They should be in smart foster homes, where they get to be themselves and be assesed. I would guess that if any one of my dogs ended up there for more than a couple days (dont worry, they wont EVER) they'd turn to aggression as an outlet as well due to sheer boredum, pent up energy, and excessive noise & action. As it is my dogs dont mind fence-fighting or barking at other dogs when I take them to work (at a kennel) once in a while. Open the gate and they're friends, put some chainlink in between them and they act like fools. About 70% of ALL dogs of different breeds that I've seen at the kennel this summer do this, and there hasnt been a single APBT boarded there yet.

The manager was telling me about one that attacked another dog, claimed it took 3 staff members to get the dog off the other one because she was so LOCKED on. I cringed, told her not to say LOCKED, and asked if they had a break-stick. Nope. WHAT? Nope.

So, as soon as I find somewhere that will ship me break-sticks (to Canada), I'll get a couple for me and 2 for the SPCA. I may also donate detailed instructions on how to use them, and some info on pitbull myths, especially the LOCKING JAWS thing. I'd like to offer to help some of these dogs, but I'm not sure how to offer without sounding like I dont appreciate what they do and the dogs they DO save. Any suggestions? Sorry for such a rambling post, lol, like I said, too much on the brain.

I'll check back tomorrow....I just got the 'You're always on your laptop why dont you come to bed already?!?!?' Speech from the man...oops! :o:p

Very true our breed allways gets the shity end of the stick. And putting down a pit for DA is ruining what our breed was bred for. Pits are DA but because of the way they were bred and Incuraging DA in the processe makes our dogs less HA. They veiw other dogs as prey but view us humans as there pack. SPCA are ruining our breed. IMO even faster than BYB's. Allthou they go hand and hand if BYB's didnt produce so much then SPCA couldnt get there hands on so many stray's.

True, I also wish that the spca's would realize that these dogs can live fine if they're managed by an experienced owner. Alot of the 'da' that the dogs are accused of is simple leash and kennel/fence aggression as well. Some DA dogs are also able to overcome that with training. Clearly dogs that end up in shelters *usually* arent trained, socialized, and well cared for, hence being there in the end.
