I keep hearing BYB is horrid and I agree but what draws line of back yard breeding and being a actual breeder?

Well a breeder tests there dogs, has breeding plans and goals, and is contributing to the breed. A BYB has no plans no goals, breeds for the wrong things and contributes nothing to the breed. They usually dont have papers, so are not contributing to the registries that suports our breed and have no idea what they are doing as far as breeding goes. Just some quick thoughts.

I totally agree, nice way to narrow it all down, short but sweet. :)

In short, a byb breeds for money with no concerns to the dogs or breed or what the results are.

So if someone gets 2 dogs that are from rep. breeder or breeders then decides to breed those two dogs, keep some of pups and sell rest make them a breeder or BYB? Since they came from rep. breeder, who already tested the dogs and so forth? I was asked that last night on another page...Then it went to where does a "breeder" start at..so to me that can be a byb or a breeder all based on the actions of breeder with the litter.Anyone elses views on it..

well does this person know what to look for in a good breeding pair? Has it tested it's pups health? Work? Deemed it's conformation acceptable? Does it have goals it wants to achieve with the litter? How's it making the breed better? Why does that breeder not want to breed back to the pups? Certainly if they were worth it the breeder would use them in there program already. Just because the parents were both awesome doesn't mean it's pups are... In the words of earl Tudor " they just don't breed true" you can hope for a good breeding using percentages. There's been alot of good blood here and alot of goood blood there but if we put them together, that may not be the case.
Well its all about the breeding. Why are they breeders? What is the purpose of the breeding? What are they breeding? How are they breeding, are they making sure the breeding is well planned and the welfare of the dogs are top priority?
If the answers to those questions are, they are breeders because they think they can make money doing it, and the purpose is purely profit, and they are breeding dogs that have done nothing to prove themselves other than looking good, and the breedings are poorly planned as they try to produce as many litters as possible to maximize their profits, and the dogs are kept in piss poor conditions. Then you have a good case to say this breeder is a BYB.

If the person in your hypothetical situation did indeed buy the dogs from reputable breeders, it would have been on a spay/neuter contract, or the dog would be worked or shown. So if this person bought a dog from someone who allows their pups to be bred by someone who is inexperienced and does not work or show, that "breeder" is probably not reputable to begin with. If the breeder did not register the pup because it was never altered or worked, any breeding would result in unpapered pups. So to answer your question, in that hypothetical the people are all BYBs IMO.
