so my gf was in the field that we always go to play in across the street. this lady walks by with a dog, and her kids. as she was walking back home this dog comes out of no where and is on top of Nismo. my gf didntt hear or see the dog coming, either did nismo. the dog was on top of nismo and all you could hear is growls. so my gf had to think quick, the only thing she thought to do was throw kicks and punches at the other dog. the owner and her kids come out of no where and push her and said, dont hit my dog thats animal abuse. so after them fighting for a while the owner of the other dog called the police, my gf, sarah, doesnt have cell so she wasnt able to call.
the owner of the other dog began to tell police that our dog was off leash and instigating the her dog.
instigating or not, keep your fu***** dog on a leash. nismo is well behaved, he's not a fighter. he limped home on his already bad hips.
he didnt have any puncture woonds thank god. no charges were able to be filed against us because her stories didnt make since and she was all over the place.
we, now have a chance to press charges on her. i dont think we will, because nismo wasnt hurt. but at the same time i want to, because it could have ended differently. they are paying for him to go to the vet next week, which im thinking will come out of her pocket.
Nismo was really upset after this happened, he was trying to get at the other dog, he seemed pissed. im afraid now that after this has happened, he wont be able to be around other dogs...
im just pissed because she called the cops on us for her dog attacking ours. wth was she thinking?!
i really hate some people sometimes.

Did you have your break stick? kicking and punching isnt the best way to stop a dog fight, im sure in the chaos of it all it was the first thing that jumped into her head. Perhaps you and her should formulate a plan for WHEN not IF this happens again. I hope for nismos sake or your future dogs sake that this never happens again. but you cant be so sure. I hate to sound like a broken record but THIS is why we carry breaksticks. I am very sorry to hear about this unfortunate accident and i hope nismo makes a full recovery. If this other dog is a danger to people then YES YOU SHOULD PRESS CHARGES.

teaching her how to use a break stick would be a very good idea, thats what ran through my head after she told me what happened. and that would be the smartest thing to do, since the area i live in has A LOT of pitbulls, but USUALLY they are pretty well kept. good idea dan thank you.
sarah and emeregencies dont mix lol. it just sucks that you cant even go on a walk around the block without having to prepare for a dog fight each time you go out.
butttt you gotta do what you gotta do, and next time we will be prepared.
idk if her dog is a danger to the public, but in her hands im thinking it might be i mean if you cant keep your dog under control and on a leash, you have no business owning any breed of dog. not to mention our prized apbt and bullies.

Well when you own a dog bred for over a century to fight then be prepared for one. Thatsmy thinking. I don't carry a break stick fearing one of my boys is going to get away from me I carry it for if a stray gets near them. It is sad this other owner was irresponsible. Makes me think of the joke I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out... That's how I feel when I walk my dogs in public constantly looking for a potential hockey game and trying to avoid it.

LOL whatever you need but mace I don't think will work especially when the dogs start rolling you'll get it all overboth of them. If you can get close enough to spray a dog in the eyes with mace while itsrolling around you might aswell use a break stick. Keep me updated on nismos condition. Poor baby.

hes fine, his hips have been bothering him lately and i guess he was limping home pretty bad. but hes not limping now so i think hes fine. we'll take it easy the next couple days to make sure
Poor Nismo...
You better press charges on that SOB. Make her pay and learn a nice lesson. Maybe then she'll keep her dog on a leash.
This is absolutely not your faults. And when ever you take your dog out where there might be other dogs, you are always taking the risk, anywhere. I think the best way to prevent something like this is to be always aware of the hidden danger and keep looking for it regardless.
When ever i take Czar out to potty, i always look everywhere for dogs, even though i don't see any, but i know my apartment complex allows dogs and i am not trusting everyone to be completely responsible. And anytime i see a another dog, i hold Czar on very short leash, make sure he is right next to me. Keep my eyes on the other dog, and slowly walk away.
You should definitely invest in a breaking stick, even though in this situation it might not have helped since the other dogs owners where attacking your girl friend for trying to break the fight.
This was completely the other peoples fault, and if this was the first incident, even though it could be worse, as long as they acknowledge it and pay for any medical expenses, it should be good. But always be weary of these people and their dog.

I had about the same thing happen but it was in my yard YET MY KUMHO WHO WAS LEASHED and attempted to get jump on by some dumb SOB with like 5 kids/wife and 2 UNLEASHED dogs walking down road.I kicked one dog, then hit one in head with break stick and gotta hella yelp and the other backed down.THEN THEY called law since I kicked there dog and hit one.The cop asked me whats up I told him THEN the guy across road talked to cop about there dog crapping on yard and backed my story not even knowing why the cop was there. They wrote them about 7 tickets.FOR ONCE a honest cop and cop ask me if I wanted vet care I told them no the one dog made VERY little contact with moe but to get there two looked over.IF i had not had my moe on leash in MY DAMN YARD it would have been my fault also the cop said. He also had to see my break stick NOT sure why but I showed him

Poor Nizmo, well I hope he recovers well and I'm glad he doesn't have any severe injuries. This is exactly the reason I don't walk my dogs in my neighborhood or take them to parks or really anywhere. Its just not worth the risk to me or my dogs. They get worked plenty in the yard
I agree that learning to use a break stick would be a great idea wether you have pits or not, its a great tool for the occasion of when (its never an if with these dogs :) ) a fight breaks out.

I would totally press charges only because if not they might thinik it is okay to let their dog run off leash again. I believe she needs to learn her lesson. :)

thanks for caring everyone.
i have to walk him and go to the park to play with him because he has no where else to get exercise. n ext time we will be better prepared.
i have a break stick that i had made a long time ago, even before i got nismo, but it looks like ****. but thanks to a very kind someone on the boards i will have a better one soon.
im not sure if she let the dog off the leash, or the dog slipped the collar. eitherway it shouldnt have happened. im already paranoid about other dogs on our walk. and this incident just makes it a reality. but thank god nismo is ok.

this really sux i had a similar incident in my park, after 9pm dogs are allowed off leash and i usually find a nice isolated spot in the park so we can play without interuptions and before i knew it someones pit mix ran straight up to lexi with a bone in its mouth lexi snatched the bone form the dog and when the other dog got pissed it was on because lexi is extremely toy dominant, nothing happened because i no when lexis ready to do work so i just grabbed her and walked on but it taught me two valuble lessons pits will fight way before flight(this was the first time lexi ever showed any da) and its not always your dog that starts it but mot likely the apbt will finish it and since this awakening lexi has never got hold of another dog since its all about responsibility on the owners end which this person clearly had none of i hope nismo feels better

nismo has shown DA here and there, but not really since he was neutered. before he was neutered he wouldnt submit to big dogs, but now he's really good about it. i just hope this didnt turn his internal DA switch on. :/

Sorry to hear about the altercation with the other dog. It is so frustrating to hear that other people are not responsible enough to keep their dogs on a leash. I have that around here....NO ONE uses a leash. This is a small community and they have no friggin idea of what could happen, there isn't even an spca here anymore so dogs can just run amok it is dangerous.
I hope Nizmo will be ok!

I think alot of DA aggression that starts with one fight can also have alot to do with how the handler is. If you're nervous and worried when you see another dog, theres a better chance your dog will be too. After one fight, I'd imagine a handler gets a little edgy. It's too bad there are so many people out there that take stupid risks with loose dogs. Glad to hear your boy is okay though, in the end that's most important!

Great tool for everyone to have. I just make sure to not make it visible when I am out in public. A breaking stick or Parting stick as they also call it is fighting paraphernalia 101 to animal control, law enforcement, and to the public. You also have to be aware of how to use it before potentially causing damage (eg. turning of the break stick could break teeth). Inserting the stick and prying the mouth is a much safer method if you want the teeth to stay intact. Also have an alternative plan just incase. Heres a link that you can get break sticks from. All proceeds are donated to pit rescue http://www.pbrc.net/shop/bsticks.html . There is also a download that will give you info on how to make your own if you wish.
