View Full Version : Indestructible Crate?

Angel has destroyed her crate beyond repair this time...stupid old bat rips the bars off the crate! We have the heaviest duty crate they sell to consumers from pet stores, but we need something either much stronger OR with much smaller holes so she can't get her mouth on the bars to rip them off...Problem is every super crate I have seen is like $250-$1000

Does anyone know of a place we can get a solid crate that won't break the bank, or are we just gonna have to suck it up and spend a fortune to keep her locked up?

I don't know for sure about buying from stores but I would say keep A eye out on craigs list and maybe you'll come across something.

I have honestly looked at this thread over 3 times now and I can't think of anything that isn't going to cost alot :( to bad you don't know a welder that could weld a metal plate to the door to where it had no holes on the inside when you closed it

I think your going to have to stay on craigs list or go to a lot of shows in the hope that someone is trying to unload one who's in a bind. In NC Diamond Deluxe out of Dunn makes a very nice single dog unit. All diamond plate aluminum with good ventilation. They will build it to your specs. Not cheap.
Does your dog just become so addled that it becomes frantic with that can't hold me back attitude?I don't have a pit but my dogs can become so reactive towards game they will hurt themselves trying to get out of their dog box. I'm sure if they were in a crate they would break out but I use crates around the house. I leave the doors open when they are allowed to run around and they will usually return to their crates for a nap. They feel comfortable their. Chris Mercer

Yeah we've been checking CL but there is only your standard dog crates...since Christmas her crate has had heavy plastic kick paneling attached to the inside of the crate, but she is still breaking bars off where ever she can get to them...right now she can get her head out of the crate and I am afraid she is gonna hurt herself. We have is blocked on all sides right now so she can't stick her head out until we figure out our next move...crazy old dog! No wonder all her teeth are flat!

Maybe I can find something like in the $200 range it would be better then wasting another $80-$90 on a crate she is just gonna destroy!

You'll probably pay around 500$ for a single crate but in the long run it will out last the dog. Not wishing anything bad on your dog. Their are a host of hunting dog supply stores in our state and they can order you one. They don't usually keep the single dog type in stock as the ones for multiple dogs are a bigger seller. They range from 350-900+. The protection dog type are even higher but are usually built into your ride. If you live near Faytville contact Godwins hunting supply in Raeford, he has close to fifty in stock. 1-877-377-5942/Diamond Deluxe 336 -859-4561/ I was wrong they are in Denton, NC/www.diamonddeluxe.com

http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg61/chatnjack/FORUMALBUM/dog_box.jpg

This is a generic picture of a box that a guy in Texas made for a friend of mine awhile back. We used it basically as a guide / pattern to make a few of our own. This particular dog box is made with 1" square steel tubing for framing and expanded metal used for siding. It’s 4' x 4' and stands 29" to the top of the deck railing. The interior of the box measures 24" to the top. The top deck has multiple hooks where you can use bungee cord’s to tie down ice chests or any other kind of outdoor, dog or sports related equipment. I have five boxes exactly like the one pictured except mine are single units, not doubles and have stainless steel floor’s in them where my friend uses ¾” plywood for flooring in his. You can basically use a picture like this and have any halfazz welder fabricate you a decent dog box for around $300 or $400. Regardless of what type of crate /indoor kennel you decide to go with, you defiantly need a bigger one than what you’re using now. “IMHO” (in my honest opinion) that wire crate that you’re using is ok for a road trip, fun or sanctioned AKC, UKC or ADBA conformation show or weight pull but “way to small” to be used on a permanent basis as containment in a home environment. Whether you’re using it to crate train or even a temporary means of confinement while your not at home, IMHO… it’s just way to small ! All of my inside (I have three total) crates a.k.a. dog boxes are made out of aluminum and are 4’X4’ by 30” in height. They’re only used for our house dog when we’re not home or if a bitch is in season ect. You also might want to take Chris’ advice with a twist Sydney about craigslist… instead of looking for a crate or dog box For Sale, try placing a Wanted Add for one. Never hurts’ to try right? Best of luck to you!

Thanks guys this is all very helpful. I don't think she needs a super crate i think what she needs is something with smaller holes that she can't get her mouth on. I found a wire crate that is affordable that has 1" mesh wire crate made by kennel aire. Someone at training had one and I think it should work. I will let y'all know how it works out.

I'll post a link later when I get home but a 36" x 24" is about $126

If you purchased that crate from http://www.southeasternpetproducts.com/Extra_Large_Super_Dog_Cage.htm out of Nicholson, Georgia Absolute Peril, I hope you’re luckier than I was. I bought one used from a friend that had never taken it out of the boxes. The first time I used it was to quarantine one of my Loposay bitches when she came in to heat inside of my house. She tore out of it and started chewing through a solid wooden bedroom door trying to get out of the room, in to the rest of the house where my Colby house dog was. Lucky for me my wife and I got home just as she was figuring out that it is easier to go through a sheetrock wall than a solid birch door. The cheap metal in my wife’s jenday conure’s bird cage has more tensile strength to it than that cage did. For the sake of people who still buy those things, I sure hope they’ve improved in the quality and strength of the material they use. It looked great but, quality wise it sucked! (btw- I’m not bashing you or your kennel Absolute Peril, I’m just sharing my experience with other’s concerning the exact cage pictured in your post… nothing personal). In my honest opinion, the only “Indestructible Crate” that anyone’s going to find for a real bulldog is one that’s made out of steel tubing and expanded metal. Good luck with whatever you go with Sydney!

I loved your warm weather box Jack. The rail could also be used for rigging your strike dog, I would add a little carpet for footing plus the lead. I don't need one but I'd love to have the two dog one. Sydney it is possible that Jack is right about the crate being too small. She looks anxious in the shot but maybe she's camera shy.
I respect your privacy but if you give me your address I can tell you if I come across such a crate. I called Diamond deluxe and had to laugh, a box could cost you up to 700$/single dog.
Chat n Jack, I just saw a all aluminum two dog box with storage sell for 400$. It was two weeks old and the owner was in and out of the sport that fast. It sold new for 900$. Sydney good luck.

Sydney, I don’t know exactly what part of North Carolina you live in but I did a very quick search on a few N.C. craigslist and found some boxes for sale (the lowest price was $50) that you might be interested in (see the links below). There’s always a good deal on craigslist for dog boxes (at least in my area to both buy & sell them). Also, you might even try a local Flea Market or Swap Meet if you have one close to you or even place a “WANTED” add on your local craigslist or put up a few flyer’s in your local Tractor Supply Store’s and Feed & Seed Supply’s.

http://fayetteville.craigslist.org/spo/1735199737.html

http://fayetteville.craigslist.org/spo/1709791296.html
(IMHO this is a steal at only $300 = a very good box located in Raeford, N.C. - the add says, “contact Caleb at 910 624 3958 if i dont pick up just leave a message or you can text me for more info. Price is negotiable”)

http://asheville.craigslist.org/grd/1722997740.html
(add says, “This dog box is two door with a storage spaces on both sides. It has locking doors and fits around tire wells. Aluminum and can hold up to two dogs in each side.
Asking: $150” - Marion, N.C.)

I could keep on going but it isn’t hard to do for yourself. Just go here…
http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/nc

Then click on the respective area in which you live in or prefer to shop and use the search option to look for “Dog Box, Dog Boxes, Aluminum Dog Boxes, ect). Once again, good luck in your search.

P.S.

I e-mailed the guy about this box in particular and he called me back, end of story… the wife & I are going to North Carolina in the morning to buy it

http://charlotte.craigslist.org/spo/1788144875.html

He’s only asking $400 and said that’s negotiable because he really wants it gone now. I can easily resell that box in my area for $900 as-is and possible as much as $1,200 if I get my father-in-law to modify it a little bit and upgrade it with about $100 in materials. Either way it’s well worth the trip for me.

For our dog Jazzy, (who can destroy anything) I keep her in a plastic crate. What I had to do is take two "bottoms" (bottom half of plastic kennels with no holes) and put those together. Then I took and drilled out extra holes and doubled up the amount of nuts/bolts holding the two pieces together. Then I drilled two holes on each side of the door (top & bottom) so I could run two pieces of all thread through in front of the door. So far a year later and no more break outs!!

Also, if youre interested, I have a solid steel fold out crate I would sell for $100. This is not a wire crate, its all flat stainless steel. Kind of like a hunting box but just for a single dog. Very sturdy and a little larger than your average wire crate. You can email me ( spurgeonsigns@aol.com ) or call (423) 314-6502 If you have any questions.

Damn I just ordered the one with the 1"wire "mesh" but if it doesn't work I will be all over the aluminum folding one!

Kennel Aire Professional Black Series (http://www.preferredpetproducts.com/professional-black-series-folding-kennel.aspx)

Jack thank you so much I looked around, but unfortunately we don't have a lot of room and need something that can fold flat for travel...when we travel is when her anxiety is at it's worst! She was an abandoned dog my husband found in the streets of Charlotte wondering around with a hernia...she has always had seperation issues :(

She is currently in a plastic crate that is a bit too small, but again they can be kinda a pain to travel with, and she already chews on the insides around the door so we would have to re-enforce it

I really appreciate all the help and suggestions!

She will probably destroy that type of crate (well, all of mine do lol). I would probably use that one for when you travel and get something sturdier to keep her in on a daily basis. Just let me know, I havent been in a big hurry to sell this one. I also found another solid steel crate last night that I forgot I had. It doesnt fold down though. Would probably work for you though.

Do you think you could possibly send me a picture of it...and let me know the deminsions cause the 4 hrs she spent in this crate today did not go so well...She can't get her mouth on the 1"parts but all around the bottom pan area the slats are wider and she can get what's left her teeth on those...as you can see

Oh well at least it will still make a good estra crate to take to Schutzhund practice... :(

Oooooh no!! I hate to see that. Dont feel bad though, I have several that are that way.

I can send pics no problem. I will be around the crate this weekend but not around a computer. If you will call me sometime tonight or tomorrow I can text you a pic or possibly email some to you from my phone.
