I like a smaller collar on my dogs. These generally last the life of a dog--- I have to put a new hole in them once every three or four years, and I condition them occasionally. This is a very old obedience oriented company I have used for years.

Their field collars are very durable, too.

I bought my collar from pitbullgear.com. They have a wide variety of skins and colors you can choose from. They are 2ply and range in size from 1-3 inches wide and most have spikes or studs but you can also custom order what you want and have them engraved. They have a solid D ring and buckle on them. I payed around $40 for mine, its an 1.5" gator skin dyed grey. The collar is good quality but the caould use a little help in the customer service area, they are sometimes slow to get back to you.

Is the leather collar going to be used for everyday wear or just every once in a while the reason I ask is because if it's for everyday wear you really can't beat a nylon collar we have had leather collars break with one of our outside dogs I wouldn't suggest using leather if it's an outside dog on a chain set up but that's just my personal bad exsperience with leather I will never again use leather unless it's just for every once in a while use.....

We bought one of ours off the clearance rack at the pet store. It was a good thick collar, but it looked like it could fit a clydesdale (which is probably why it hadn't sold.) We custom-sized it for Daisy by cutting it short and punching the holes with a leather-punch from the fabric store. Total cost: $7.00 for the collar & about $20 for the punch. There's no guarantee that you'll find something like that, but it's worth a look if you're on a restrictive budget like we are.

If you’re looking for a leather collar to use for containment purposes only, you WILL NOT find a collar of better quality or price anywhere else, regardless be it on the web or your local pet shop, feed & seed supply or tractor supply store than Stillwater Kennel Supply. http://www.stillwaterkennelsupply.com/ Click on the “Dog Collars” and “BIG Dog Collars” section on his menu located on the left hand side of his home page to see the selection of leather collars he has. The fancy alligator and studded collars on those other web sites are ok, even pretty if that’s your thing and might even be fine for a non-dog-aggressive APBT in an ADBA conformation show ring but, THEY SHOULD NEVER BE USED FOR CONTAINMENT PURPOSES! A very good friend of mine just loves and had to have one of those, “fancy” jeweled & studded leather collars so after and at my urging she purchased one from Stillwater and then had a local leather vendor and good friend of mine at our flea market add a lot of custom jewels (fake of course), studs, ect to it. She’s happier now than a pig eating chitz. Not my thing but maybe a thought for one of you guys or gals looking for a custom leather collar of that nature and or style. Leather shop’s will customize anything, and I do mean anything. Trust me after riding (a motorcycle) as long as I have, I know (or use to ride. I’m no longer able to due to health reasons). Good luck to the OP and anyone else thinking about getting a leather collar.

#1. Is a kevlar cut collar
#2. Number #2 & #5 are custom leather cut collars made for me by Stillwater for Buckshot. Shane does not make or sell these to the general public.
#3. Is a 4 ply seatbelt collar w/velcro by Stillwater. The extra ring squared off at the end is my own idea & use that I‘ve added. It’s a safety ring that oil riggers, steel workers and people who climb billboards, ect use. They’re OSHA (The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration Agency) approved. When you drive by a State Highway or Road project and see things like those big generators with tires hanging 75 feet up in the air by a crane, that’s the exact same safety rings that they use to hook them to.
#4. Is a 2 ply Stillwater collar (about 10 years old).
#5. (See #2. above.)
#6. Breeding stand straps made for me by Stillwater for the breeding stands I make.
#7. Is a 4 ply seatbelt collar by Stillwater.
#8. The very 1st collar with a draft horse swivel ever made by Stillwater modeled after #9 that Shane made after I approached him with the idea several years ago and asked him to make some for me based on ones I‘d previously made.
#9. That collar is made out of surplus military material (parachute strap material) with stainless steel hardware including the draft horse swivel. I made around 100 of these over 10 years ago and after my own use and sharing of them with friends for free over the years, this is my very last one and was worn only 5 times by Blade (once at the 2004 ADBA Nationals). I still have a bolt (about 2,000 feet) of the parachute strap material and an industrial walking foot sewing machine but after pricing the hardware, even in bulk which especially the only way to buy the draft horse swivels, it just wasn’t feasible for me to purchase all the hardware needed to make only a few collars for myself as I have no desire to sell them via the web or at shows thus my reason for going to Stillwater.

thanks so much CHATNJACK. I was thinking about a fancy collar for special days but you are so right on about them not being strong enough, which is far more important than looks. I do love the quality of stillwater stuff we have a padded walking harness that he used to have on his website that we have had for quite some time now and use it at least 3-4 times a week and on hikes he has even gone swimming in a lake with it last year and it is still holding up like new.
of the collars you have listed the only ones he doesn't supply to the public are #2 & #5? do you know if #1 is available to the public? what is the width of that collar?
thanks again for the information i truely appreciate it.

#1. The kevlar cut collar is for feral hog hunting and not cheap. Stillwater does not make or sell those.
If you JUST HAVE TO HAVE a leather collar, take my advice and purchase one from Shane then have it customized at a local leather shop. Try a shop that specializes in biker ware. Good luck!

we chose to get a paco collar custom made. it was a lot more expensive than stillwater but meets our needs better because we picked everything about it. it is so far super durable. it has been thru a lot already in the time we have had it and no damage even in the water it is great

I ordered it then picked it up from him at a weight pull he was putting on back in the day. I am very happy with it.

I like larger sized collars. I bought two for my pups and they cost around $200 total. They are really quality collars and show no signs of wear and it's been over a year. They really play hard and these collars hold up well. I got them from Pacocollars.com.
