This information is for responsible dog owners, it is not intended to be used for illegal purposes

The parting stick, the break stick, the safety stick. Many names for this handy and necessary device but they are all the same thing. They should be kept in all convenient places around the dogs yard and in the house so one is always handy. They should be taken with you whenever you leave the house with your dog.

Definition: a parting stick is a device made of wood, plastic, or anyother material hard enough not to break when needed but soft enough so it doesn't shatter teeth.

Examples: parting sticks come in all shapes and sizes. From simple broom handles made of pine to hammer handles made of hickory some south of the boarder have been known to use ornate goat horns(not reccomended for beginners or goat lovers ;) ). A fancy break stick is not necessary, only a functional one. To fashion a breakstick pick out a good piece of wood I would reccomend a broom handle about 10" long for the beginner. It is easy to handle and soft enough so mistakes with it are more forgivable. Whittle, sand, or shape one end into a tapered flat wedge. Take care to sand down most edges so you don't injure your bulldog gums on accident. The stick should have somewhat blunt edges but tapered thin enough for our purposes. Hammer handles are also very useful, they fit well in the hand but hickory can be a hard wood and can shatter teeth in the untrained hand.

Use: a parting stick should be used to seperate dogs when the unfortunate happens...kennel accidents, irresponsible owners, wandering strays etc... The sticks purpose is to seperate the teeth of the dog momentarily so you can seperate the dog from whatever it has in its grip safely and swiftly. Remember when encountering the unfortunate event 1) remain calm there's enough excitement without you adding more 2) approach from a safe angle 3) stay clear of your dogs teeth and the other dogs teeth until the moment is right 4) always control the dog you wish to seperate first either by grabbing scruff, collar, harness, or straddling them. 5) your safety comes first be on your toes don't think your dog won't bite you on accident. 6) do not pull your dog away until you have released it's hold, this is to minimize damage to both animals.
To use your stick choose which side of the dogs mouth is most accesible, controlling said dog lift lip with side of stick (if teeth are not already exposed) position tip of stick behind inscissors and in front of mollars. There is a nice space nature has provided for us bull dog owners. The flattened wedges longest aide should be parallel with the jaws, pushing breakstick in between teeth and twisting slowly your goal is to seperate the teeth just enough to remove the dog from it's hold. Having two people is nice but if you only have one rush the controlled dog to safety.

Precautions: if your stick is too soft it will break before becoming useful. If you penetrate to deep you could hurt the inside of the dogs mouth. If you pry instead of twist you could push your stick into the roof of the dogs mouth and hurt it's sinuses.

Other methods: squirting a dog with water will not work! Hitting a dog on it's head will not work! In fact it may increase it's bite response! Shooting, macing, tazing, stunning are not acceptable ways of excercising responsible ownership. If an unfortunate event happens inthe house shutting the door between two dogs has been known to work. Comical stories such as sprinkling pepper and a dog sneezing itself loose are often told but I don't reccomend this.

Hope this is helpful,
Dan

YOU should carry a break stick around IF you own a bull dog! YOU should have one handy in your house at all times IF you own more than one dog or your dog spends time with another dog. YOU should carry a break stick with you ANYTIME you leave the house with your dog. Looks like YOU have some break sticks to make. :)

Hey you know any places that make good breaking sticks?

They can sell for upwards of $50. I'd suggest making your own using a power sander or spending a week whittling it at night. Many sights sell stun guns as a break stick this is not ok!! You can use some plastics as long as it's soft enough. Bite it with your teeth if you can put a mark in it, it's the right material.

www.uglydogranch.org has hunting dog supplies. There break stick is a bit sharp for my liking. That breakstick can be made at any TAP plastics or plastic shaping business for much less than $15.

I carry a break stick around. I have one at my house and one that stays in the truck. Knowing how to use one is a must.

Do's and Don't's of Break Sticks:

Do keep a break stick handy in the home where you can easily
access it should a fight break out. By the door to the yard and
in the kitchen are possible choices.

Do familiarize yourself with the stick and how to use it BEFORE
you actually ever do need to use it.

Should you need to use your break stick, straddle the Pit Bull
from behind, clasp your knees around its waist. Use one hand
to steady the dog's head (hold onto the scruff or collar) and
the other hand to insert the flat end of the break stick into the
far corner of the Pit Bull's mouth (at the gap between the back
of the jaw and the molars). Twist the stick and as soon as you
gain leverage, pull the dogs apart (the second dog should be
tied to a sturdy object before hand, if possible, especially if the
second dog is a Pit Bull).

Do realize that a break stick used on two Pit Bulls equally
engaged in a fight may not be advantageous.

Do understand the limitations of the break stick and have
alternate methods at your disposal.

Do not use a break stick on breeds other than the Pit Bull.

Great information. I really need to get one. Coaco and Zeus don't fight now but one day...

I wouldn't go to the dog park without it..might be the difference between life and death for a little dog who picks that battle..

Horrible would be too nice of a word. I was walking the other day and i came across a house with a unleashed Akita, the number one man biters. I just picked up Czar and walked away as far as i could. It followed us for a little bit barking, then it decided to take a dump at someone else's yard lol.

Yah I like to walk my dogs and ride my horse around the block and stuff but the damn unleashed dogs are everywhere. At one guy's house he has 7 unleashed dogs that just lay out in the yard but if I walk the dogs by or ride my horse by they are all about coming to start trouble, I don't have a break stick just yet but I do have some pepper spray, lmao. 3 of those dogs that run loose in the yard are GSDs, 1 lab, 1 mastiff mix or something, and to chow chows, seriously what the hell man. What is wrong with ppl!!! And that is just the beginning of it, we have so many loose dogs around here it ain't funny. :(
