Yes we have both, rep and thanks, as was stated before one supports the other. However just for a little knowledge for everyone rep gives more points than a thanks to a user (I belive) Im sure I will be corrected if wrong.

I believe it depends on your rep power. Some people's rep are worth a lot more than thank yous and some not.
