41 states have communities which have BSL or proposed it. Various insurance companies consider 75 different dog breeds to be dangerous. The Pit Bull dog is singled out as one of the worst. Yet historically, scientifically and mathematically Pit Bull dogs are safe. How did this happen?

I think it happened because of stigma, sensationalism, lack of education. Like spiders for some reason ppl just hate them even if one has never did any thing to any one.

As far as the insurance comp I mostly think it’s a way for them to make more money. They will still insure you but it will cost more. I always find myself pondering how many homes are safer from intruders because of a dog labeled dangerous VS how many homes get broken into while a Dog is not present. I always think with all the stats on the table the homes with this labeled breed costs the insurance comp less money to insure than a home without them. Because of a lack of claims. Who is going to break into a house with a barking pitbull in it. They may not generally be HA but that don’t mean they don’t bark at standers at the door or window whatever.

Basically it just seems that a beware of dog plate in your yard is just as good as a protected by Brinks sign.

Media i think has one of the biggest roles, they focus more on the negative stories of pit bulls and never report on positive stories that involve pit bulls. We heard so much about Michael Vick and his fighting dogs on the news but had to dig to find any stories on the dogs after the fact. They feed fear of "locking jaws" and equate them as "fighting dogs with no heart or soul" with not the slightest clue of how a pit bull really behaves.
The majority of people do not think for them selves and will belive what the 10 o'clock news tells them and so the dog that most every family owned 60 years ago is not the neiborhood devil that is reduced to the dog thugs and white trash. I have to tip my hat to people like Rachel Ray and Cezar Millan that shed positive light on the breed and show the dogs for what they are, 60 pound lap dogs.
Insurance... its all about money. They can squeeze more out of people they can. You have to have auto insurance and they will raise your rates reguardless if you use it or not.
OK. this is a little long so im getting off the soap box.

Imo, BSL has become a tool for politicians. When you look at the majority of regions where there is BSL, there has never really been a serious attack by pit bulls. BSL is a useless piece of legislation(like many others) that generates attention and lets local politicians tell people, "look we are doing something for the community, i am sure you will appreciate that and vote for me the next time."

Yes, there are a lot of things responsible for the spread of BSL. But ultimately, the equal blame has to go to irresponsible owners, sure media is responsible for over sensationalizing dog attacks, PETA and HSUS are out there preaching about BSL. But BSL would not even gotten started or be this popular, if people were responsible with their dogs. I believe the best way to fight BSL is to be a responsible owner and show people what the dogs are really about.
